Foundational Knowledge
The first years of school are a very important time for children’s learning and development. In Reception, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, children build the essential skills they need to be successful learners.
Strong foundations are created by focusing on early reading and phonics, writing, maths, communication, and positive behaviour. When these key skills are taught clearly and step by step, children gain confidence, independence, and a love of learning. This helps them to access the more challenging curriculum in Key Stage 2 and beyond.
By getting the basics right in the early years, schools can give children the strong foundations they need to succeed throughout their education.
