English
We use ‘TEAM English’ as a strategy for teaching Reading and Writing. This is taught in four phases: Try, Enjoy, Achieve, Move Forward. The amount of time spent on each phase is progressive throughout the school and may vary depending on the purpose of writing/ text being studied. The main themes of the writing and reading phases are linked to a class book.

Reading
At Mitton Manor Primary School, we teach reading through a variety of ways. Reading is at the core of our curriculum and we are readers in Geography, History, Science and across all subjects. At the centre of our learning, a class book is enjoyed by all the children on a daily basis. Guided Reading sessions follow our TEAM English approach exploring new vocabulary and developing our comprehension skills. In KS2, the children take part in the Accelerated Reader programme. The children are assessed every half term to ensure they are reading books to challenge their ability. Children are also able to take quizzes in school about books they have read.
"Staff are keen for all pupils to develop a love of reading. Children are taught to read as soon as they start school. Pupils regularly read at home and school. They thoroughly enjoy listening to stories that teachers read to them. Pupils who find reading more difficult are given extra support, which helps them to improve." (OFSTED, 2022)
